Tributylamine is used as proton scavenger in a variety of chemical processes and to produce quats (e.g. tributylmethyl and tetrabutyl ammonium bromide, chloride or bisulphate) which are used as phase transfer catalysts. It is utilized in the production of ammonium and phosphonium salts. Tributylamine is also used commercially as an acid acceptor, as an intermediate in the production of phase transfer catalysts, and used as directly as a catalyst in phenolic resins, polycarbonates, polyesters, and engineered plastics.
